Lesson 19
The Members Of The Church Of Christ
1 The church of Christ is comprised with all believers who have
been baptized by the Great Commission Baptism. Paul says, "For
by one Spirit are we all ___________ into ______ body (the church)
..." (1 Cor. 12:13). "For as we (Christians) have many
___________ in one _______, and all ___________ have not the same
office: So we, being many, are one _______ in Christ, and every
one ___________ of one another" (Rom. 12:4-5).
2. Jesus says, "If ye continue in my _______, then are ye
my ___________ indeed" (John 8:31). Accordingly, those who
have not submitted to Christ's baptism are not members of the
church, nor Christians (1 Cor. 12:13; Luke 6:46). Only those who
obey Christ's Gospel are Christians (2 Thess. 2:13-14).
3. The members of the church of Christ are called Christians.
"...And the disciples were called ______________ first in
Antioch" (Acts 11:26). The name Christian bears the name
of Christ and indicates one's loyalty and submission to Him. "Yet
if any man suffer as a _____________, let him not be ashamed;
but let him ___________ God on this behalf" (1 Peter 4:16).
4. The members of the church of Christ are called disciples. "And
in those days, when the number of the _________ was multiplied..."
(Acts 6:1). The name "disciple" indicates one's discipleship
in following Jesus' teaching. He is a learner.
5. The members of the church of Christ are called "saints",
"the called of Jesus Christ" and "the beloved of
God". "Among whom are ye also the ___________ of Jesus
Christ: To all that be in Rome, ____________ of God, called to
be ____________" (Rom. 1:6-7). The name "saint"
refers to their being separated from the world in moral and spiritual
holiness (1 Pet. 1:15-16). To be "the called of Jesus Christ"
means they are called out from the world of sin, into the service
of God, by Jesus Christ, through the Gospel (2 Thess. 2:13-14;
2 Tim. 2:21). And, "the beloved of God" refers to their
spiritual relationship with God, that they are His spiritual children
through the Gospel (Gal. 3:26-27; Eph. 1:5).
6. Paul told the Corinthian Christians, saying, "For ye (Christians)
are bought with a price: therefore ___________ God in your body,
and in the spirit, which are _________" (1 Cor. 6:20). Christians
are redeemed by the blood of Jesus and belong to God. They therefore
ought to glorify God for His love and mercy.
Conclusion: Believers in Christ must not only bear the name Christians,
they also must live a Christian life as God has decreed (Rom.
6:3-5, 10-14).
