Lesson 18
The Biblical Name Of The Church Of Christ
1. "And when they (the leaders of Israel) had set them (Peter
and John) in the midst, they asked, By what ________, or by what
____________, have ye done this?" (Acts 4:7) Later, the leaders
"commanded them not to __________ at all nor _________ in
the name of Jesus" (Acts 4:18). Accordingly, to do things
in Jesus' name means to do things in His authority. Therefore,
there is significance and importance in a name!
2. Paul commanded Christians, saying, "And whatsoever ye
do in word or deed, do all in the _______ of the Lord Jesus"
(Col. 3:17).
3. Did Jesus promise to build many different churches in the names
of other men? No! He told Peter, "... upon this rock I will
build ____ __________" (Mat. 16:18).
4. Paul charged the elders of Ephesus "to feed the church
of God, which he (Jesus) hath purchased with his own __________"
(Acts 20:28). Since Christ purchased the church by His own blood,
would He approve men to name His church by some other men's names?
Since the church is His body (Eph. 1:22-23), it is therefore unreasonable
to name the church with other than His own name!
5. How did Paul identify the church of Christ? Paul says, "Salute
one another with an holy kiss. The churches of ___________ salute
you" (Rom. 16:16).
6. Who has all authority over the church? Christ or men? Christ
is the "head over all things to the _________" (Eph.
1:22). Since He has all authority over the church, let us speak
of His church ONLY by His name, the church of Christ!
7. "For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of
the prophecy of this book, If any man shall _____ unto these things,
God shall _____ unto him the ________ that are written in this
book: And if any man shall ______ ______ from the words of the
book of this prophecy, God shall _______ _______ his part out
of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things
which are written in this book" (Rev.22:18-19). Since we
cannot change God's word and be right, let us respect His authority,
and name Bible things by Bible names!
Conclusion: Jesus Christ promised to build only one church (Mat.
16:18), and He shed His blood to purchase His church (Acts 20:28).
Let us not pretend to be His disciples and call His church by
some man's name! We must call His church only as THE CHURCH OF
CHRIST!
